Cabo in December: Weather, Whales & Holidays
The humpbacks come down from Alaska and reach the tip of Baja in the middle of December, and once they arrive the whole month changes character. You hear the blow before you see it. From an oceanfront terrace along the Corridor you can watch a mother and calf move across the bay while you are still on your first coffee, and by late month the spouts are frequent enough that people stop pointing them out. Mexico's regulated whale watching season opens December 15 and runs to April 15, which is the single most useful date on a December calendar. Everything else about the month, the dry 79 degree afternoons, the posadas, the seven night holiday window, arranges itself around that.

The whales, and where you watch them from
Humpbacks are the December whale. They calve and court in the warm water off both coasts of the cape, and the first arrivals build through the second half of the month before numbers peak in January and February. Gray whales pass on the Pacific side on their way to the lagoons at San Ignacio and Magdalena Bay, so a Cabo boat sees them less often than the humpbacks. Blue whales stay further north in the Sea of Cortez until late winter.
Two marinas put you on the water. Cabo San Lucas marina is the busy one, ten minutes from Medano Beach villas, and boats there clear the Arch and are in whale water within twenty minutes. Puerto Los Cabos marina in San Jose del Cabo is quieter, better for families who do not want the crowd, and closer to the east cape. A small boat gets you closer and moves faster. A larger vessel is drier and steadier if anyone in the group is prone to seasickness. Morning trips beat afternoon ones because the wind picks up after noon.
You do not have to book anything to see whales in December. Any oceanfront terrace facing the Sea of Cortez is a viewing platform for eight weeks of the year. Keep binoculars on the breakfast table and watch the middle distance rather than the horizon.

The month is really four different trips. Which one you book depends on whether you care more about whales, quiet, or Christmas Eve.
December 1 to 8
The quietest stretch of the month and the best value in it. Early December runs 40 to 60 percent below the Christmas and New Year weeks, restaurant tables are easy, and the water still holds late autumn warmth. The tradeoff is honest: the whale watching season has not opened yet, so this is a beach and golf week rather than a whale week. Sea turtle releases from the season's last nests are usually still running on Corridor beaches.
December 9 to 15
December 12 is the feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe, and processions fill the streets around the mission church in San Jose del Cabo and the church on the Cabo San Lucas plaza from the night before. Worth walking into rather than watching from a car. The San Jose gallery district holds its Thursday evening Art Walk from 5 to 9 pm through the winter. Whale watching opens on the 15th and the first humpback sightings start coming in.
December 16 to 19
The sharpest four days on the calendar. Posadas begin on the 16th and run nightly to Christmas Eve, the whales are in the water, and holiday minimums and holiday pricing have not started. If you want the season without the seven night commitment, this is the window to ask about first.
December 20 to 31
The portfolio books at seven nights across this window and it fills early, so the villa decision happens months ahead of the menu decisions. Christmas Eve is the main meal in Mexico and it runs late. New Year's Eve at the villa needs no permit and no outside vendors: we staff it with our own team, and add a sous chef for parties over twelve guests. Sunset lands just after 5 pm in mid December, so the pool and fire pit hours start early.
