La Paz Journeys

Real itineraries for the Sea of Cortez: whale sharks in winter, the sea lions of Espíritu Santo, and the quiet, wild side of Baja. Planned end to end by your concierge.

The journeys

Planned end to end

Cousteau called this the aquarium of the world. We build the days around what is in the water, and when.

La Paz is about the sea and the seasons. Each journey is built on a real window, the whale sharks, the sea lions, the rays, and timed to put you in the water when it matters.

Choose the one that fits your dates, and we shape it around your stay and your pace.

Snorkeling with a whale shark in La Paz Bay

01 · December to March

The Whale Shark Expedition

Swim beside the largest fish in the sea.

Duration

5 days

Best for

Ocean lovers

Season

Whale shark window

Each winter, whale sharks gather in the shallows of La Paz Bay to feed, and for a few months you can slip into the water and snorkel beside the largest fish in the sea, gentle juveniles a short boat ride from the city. The season runs roughly November to April and is best from December into March, when humpbacks and the sea lions of Espíritu Santo are around too.

It is tightly regulated to protect the animals and depends on the weather and the sharks, so we book a licensed operator and an early slot and keep the days flexible.

Arrive

Into La Paz for a sunset on the Malecón and the seafood the city is known for, with a briefing on the week's conditions.

2

The whale sharks

A private whale-shark swim in the bay with a permitted operator, on an early slot when the water is calm. The afternoon is for the spa or the pool.

Scuba diving the Sea of Cortez near La Paz

02 · September to November

The Dive Trip

Hammerheads, a wreck, and the aquarium of the world.

Duration

6 days

Best for

Certified divers

Season

Big-animal season

The Sea of Cortez is the aquarium of the world, and autumn is its sweet spot: warm water, the sea lions reopened after their summer closure, hammerheads still schooling at the seamounts, and the first whale sharks arriving. This is a trip for certified divers, built around the island reefs, the Salvatierra wreck, the hammerheads of El Bajo, and Cabo Pulmo to the south.

We match the sites to your certification and the conditions, with a private boat and the right guides.

1

Arrive and check in

Into La Paz, a gear check, and an easy shakedown dive to settle in before the bigger days.

2

Espíritu Santo and the sea lions

The island's reefs and the sea lion colony at Los Islotes, open September to May, playful and curious in the shallows.

3

The Salvatierra wreck

A ferry that went down in 1976, sitting upright on the sand at sixty feet, mostly intact and easy to explore, paired with a second reef.

4

El Bajo

The El Bajo seamount in search of schooling hammerheads, an advanced dive on depth and current, summer into fall, never guaranteed but unforgettable when they come.

5

Cabo Pulmo

A day trip south to Cabo Pulmo, the recovered reef and UNESCO site, for the tornadoes of jacks, the turtles, and the bull sharks of a protected sea.

6

Depart

A surface day and the transfer home, no diving before you fly.

Luxury beach camp on Espíritu Santo island

03 · October to May

Espíritu Santo & the Island Camp

Sleep on the island, off the grid, under the stars.

Duration

5 days

Best for

Couples and small groups

Season

Camp season

Spend two nights on the island itself. Each season, a luxury camp sets a handful of walk-in tents on a beach of Espíritu Santo, off the grid and out of cell range, with real beds, a chef, and a naturalist guide. Days are sea lions, kayaking, and red-rock canyons; nights are the stars and the sound of the sea with nothing else around.

The camp runs October to May and books up, so we plan it early and pair it with the best of the mainland on either side.

1

La Paz

Arrive, provision, and ease into it with a quiet evening on the Malecón before the crossing.

2

To the island

The boat to Espíritu Santo and into the beachfront camp, then an afternoon snorkeling the sea lions and kayaking the coves, with happy hour under the stars.

3

A full island day

Hiking the red-rock canyons, more time in the water, and the slow rhythm of a place with no road, no signal, and no schedule.

4

Back to the mainland

Return to La Paz and an easy afternoon at Balandra or Tecolote.

5

El Triunfo or depart

The old mining town of El Triunfo and the Sierra countryside, or a slow morning before the transfer home.

Family Nature Adventure

The wild, gentle side of Baja, for every age.

Duration

5 days

Families

Season

Cooler months

La Paz makes a nature trip easy for every age. Calm, shallow water for the little ones, sea lions and snorkeling for the older kids, and, in winter, the friendly gray whales of Magdalena Bay that come right to the boat. The wildlife is the point, and the pace is gentle.

We choose the calmer months, October to May, and shape the days around who is coming and what they can handle.

1

Arrive

Into La Paz, the Malecón at dusk, and a primer at the aquarium or the whale-shark museum to set up the week.

2

El Tesoro

The calm, shallow cove of El Tesoro for beginner snorkel lessons and paddleboards, ideal for first-timers and kids.

3

Espíritu Santo, the family way

A panga day to the island for the sea lions in season and easy snorkel coves, with a beach picnic and time to play.

4

The big animals

A whale-shark swim for the older kids, or, from January to March, a gray-whale day at Magdalena Bay, where the mothers and calves come to the boat.

5

Todos Santos or depart

The galleries and ice cream of Todos Santos, or a last swim before heading home.

Carnaval celebration on the La Paz Malecón

05 · February

Carnaval & the Gray Whales

The rare month that stacks the festival and the whales.

Duration

Best for

Culture and wildlife

Season

Carnaval

February is La Paz at its richest. Carnaval, one of Mexico's oldest, takes over the Malecón in the days before Lent with parades, comparsas, music, and food, while February is the peak month for the friendly gray whales of Magdalena Bay, and the whale sharks and humpbacks are still in the water. A rare month that stacks them all.

We pair the festival evenings with the wildlife mornings, and handle the long day out to the Pacific lagoons.

1

Arrive to Carnaval

Into La Paz as the festival opens, the Malecón alive with parades, comparsas, and free concerts along the seafront.

2

The water by day

A daytime trip to Espíritu Santo or a whale-shark swim, back in town for the evening's Carnaval.

3

The gray whales

The long, worth-it day out to Magdalena Bay on the Pacific side, February being the peak for the gray whales that approach the panga.

4

Beach and finale

A gentler day at Balandra or Tecolote, then the Carnaval finale on the Malecón.

5

Depart

A slow morning before the transfer home.
